Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 1973, artist Rosario Fernández Esteve studied Art Photography at Syracuse University and has become a veteran of editorial and commercial photography, best known for her portraiture.
In her art photography she brings together elements from her fashion and portrait style into beautiful and sometimes more complex imagery. Her emphasis is on creating a scene where the viewer has to look beyond what we think is the obvious, playing with a theme through the use of ambient, color, light and textures instead of focusing only on face therefore creating a deeper connection.
Early on in her career, Rosario was invited to join “Foto Divas”, the highly exclusive group of Puerto Rican women photojournalists and in 2000, she won first prize in photojournalism from the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña. Since then she has won numerous accolades and awards from the Puerto Rico Association of Photojournalists, Overseas Press Club and the Senate of Puerto Rico, as well as having solo shows and being involved in scores of group shows in Puerto Rico and international art fairs such as Photo Miami, Photo LA, Art Americas, CIRCA and Puerto Rico’s International Photography Biennials. In 2013 she was commissioned by the Senate of Puerto Rico, as curator of a Photographic Retrospective Exhibit of one of the most important local artists of the 20th century in Puerto Rico. In 2017, she revealed her new artwork commissioned by the legendary The San Juan Hotel for their renovated rooms and her personal artwork on display in the lobby.
Since then she has continued her work with numerous solo and group exhibits. Currently her artwork is in numerous private collections locally and abroad.
